Choose El Questro if you want to walk a gorge and sit in a spring on the eastern Gibb. Choose Lake Argyle if you want scale on water, drowned ranges, and Ord Dam history. Choose both on separate days if the week is long enough. Choose neither as a substitute for Purnululu.
The bodies of the places
El Questro is pastoral wilderness on the Pentecost: red cliff, boab, Emma Gorge for many day visitors, thermal water, a travelling day from Kununurra. Lake Argyle is the 1971 reservoir: horizontal Kimberley, freshwater crocodiles, a dam wall that fries at noon, boats that chase late light.
One is a walk. One is a sit. Both are hot.
First-timer decision rules
If anyone in the party hates long unsealed approaches, prefer the lake. If anyone gets nothing from boats, prefer El Questro. If the week already has a Purnululu road grind, do not stack El Questro the next dawn — give the lake or a town day. If the week already has a flight, El Questro is the contrasting geology.

What each is not
El Questro is not the Bungle Bungle Range. Lake Argyle is not a farm dam you dismiss. Neither is a free-range national park with a single pass that covers the other. DBCA still owns Purnululu and Mirima. Parks Australia still owns a different estate.

A scarce day, two honest tools
El Questro is gorges, springs, and an eastern Gibb road. Lake Argyle is an inland sea, a dam wall, and a sunset that can still work after a delayed flight. Neither is Purnululu. Neither replaces the other. If you have one free daylight after the sandstone, pick the tool that matches the party: walkers and heat-tolerant people to the west; people who need shade, a breeze, and less corrugation to the water.
When the lake wins
The track notice is red. The hire car is not a 4WD. Someone is already cooked. You landed at 2 p.m. and still want a landscape. The lake is close. The wall is a 2WD argument. The boat is a clock you can still catch if the operator agrees.
When El Questro wins
You want stone and water in the same walk. You have a genuine high-clearance vehicle or a licensed day tour. You have already given Purnululu its own sunrise. You accept station-park rules and a westbound road.
