Scenic flights are the easiest way to experience Purnululu, which otherwise requires a long 4WD drive. Flights depart Kununurra, with some also leaving from Lake Argyle and Warmun, and helicopter flights operate inside the park.
Flight types
Fixed-wing flight from Kununurra (no landing). A loop of around two hours over Lake Argyle, the Argyle diamond mine area, the Ord River and the Bungle Bungle Range. Good value and time-efficient.
Fly and walk. Fly from Kununurra to the park’s Bellburn airstrip, transfer by 4WD and join a guided walk to the Domes and Cathedral Gorge, then fly back. A full day, usually with lunch included. Operators typically run these from April to September.
Helicopter from within the park. Short helicopter flights from Bellburn give close-up views of the domes. Ideal if you have driven or flown in.

Tips
- Morning flights often have calmer air and softer light.
- Sit on the side recommended by your pilot for photographs.
- Wear dark clothing to reduce window reflections.
- Book well ahead for June to August.
Is it worth it?
Yes — for most visitors, a scenic flight is the highlight of the Kimberley. If you can, choose a fly-and-walk package so you experience both the aerial scale and the intimacy of Cathedral Gorge.
