Cathedral Gorge is the most famous walk in Purnululu National Park. From the Piccaninny car park in the south of the park, the track runs about 2 km return through the Domes area, along a dry creek bed and into a towering, curved chamber of red rock. Allow about 1–1.5 hours.
What to expect
The gorge opens into a huge amphitheatre with a seasonal pool. The acoustics are remarkable. Please keep noise low.

Tips
- Go in the morning or late afternoon when it is cooler.
- Carry water, even for this short walk.
- Combine with the Domes Walk for the classic Purnululu experience.
Without a 4WD
Many fly-and-walk tours from Kununurra include a guided walk to Cathedral Gorge. See scenic flights.
The walk step by step
From the Piccaninny car park, the track first passes through the beehive domes on the Domes Walk, then follows the sandy, rocky bed of a seasonal creek between rising walls. The final section narrows before opening suddenly into the amphitheatre. Sit on the sand near the pool, look up at the curved overhang and let your eyes adjust to the scale.
Photography
Wide-angle lenses capture the amphitheatre best. The light is softest early and late in the day, when reflected light gives the walls a deep orange glow. Midday sun creates harsh contrast.
Extend your walk
Fit walkers can continue along Piccaninny Creek towards the longer gorge walks, but these require experience, navigation skills and registration with rangers for overnight trips.
