By road

From Kununurra, drive about 250 km south on the Great Northern Highway to the Purnululu turn-off (roughly 2.5–3 hours). From the south, Halls Creek is about 110 km away.

From the highway, the Spring Creek Track runs 53 km to the visitor centre. It is a rough 4WD track with creek crossings and corrugations, and it takes around 2–3 hours. Only high-clearance 4WD vehicles are permitted; caravans are not allowed, though off-road camper trailers may be.

Practicalities

  • Fuel: none in the park. Fill up at Warmun or Halls Creek.
  • Water: limited drinking water at the campgrounds — bring your own supply.
  • Park fees: an entry pass is required; camping fees are extra.
  • Opening: dry season only; check current dates with Parks and Wildlife.

Without a 4WD

  • Join a scenic flight from Kununurra — see scenic flights.
  • Take a 4WD tour from Kununurra or Halls Creek.
  • Park at the Bungle Bungle caravan park near the turn-off and join a tour from there.

Driving tips

  • Lower tyre pressures as advised for corrugations.
  • Allow plenty of time and drive slowly.
  • Check water depth before crossing creeks.

Timing your drive

Leave Kununurra early so you reach the Spring Creek Track with plenty of daylight. Driving the track in the dark is not recommended: creek crossings and washouts are harder to judge, and cattle wander freely. Many travellers spend a night at the caravan park near the turn-off and tackle the track fresh in the morning.

After you arrive

Stop at the visitor centre for current walk information and track conditions. The two main campgrounds sit in different parts of the park, so choose based on which walks you plan to do first: the south for Cathedral Gorge and the Domes, the north for Echidna Chasm and Mini Palms.
